High-pressure zinc alloy die casting is one of the most efficient and versatile high-production methods used for manufacturing strong, accurate, and complex metal components. When it comes to zinc die casting, there are two basic families. The conventional, or ZAMAK alloys, are commonly named based on their sequential development. These include Alloy 3, Alloy 5, and Alloy 7. Then there are the zinc alloys with higher amounts of aluminum than the conventional alloys, ZA. These include ZA-8, ZA-12 and ZA-27. ZA alloys offer higher strength and useful bearing properties.
The high-pressure zinc alloy die casting process is carried out in an automatic machine suitable to withstand high pressure. The molten metal is pushed into a two-piece steel die containing one or more cavities, each an exact inverse replica of the part or parts. The mechanical properties of pressure zinc die castings are generally superior to other casting processes because of the quick chill and rapid solidification that takes place when the molten metal comes into contact with the relatively cool steel side.
